Young referees are often teenagers who are just beginning their officiating journey, facing unique challenges and responsibilities that can be daunting. Disrespectful behavior towards them can be particularly discouraging, leading some to consider stepping away from their roles. This not only affects their personal development but also jeopardizes the future of officiating within our soccer community.

At the grassroots level, we depend significantly on these young officials, and it is our responsibility to cultivate a supportive and nurturing environment for them. Their growth and retention are essential for the vitality of soccer in our communities.

If you encounter a referee with a GREEN whistle or wristband, remember that they are a young referee and deserve our appreciation and respect. Instead of focusing on calls, shift your focus to the game and positive plays being made by both the players and referees on the field. Set a good example by supporting EVERYONE involved—referees, players, coaches, and fellow spectators alike. Your encouragement can make a significant difference in creating a respectful and enjoyable environment for all.
